Thursday, June 26 - Bow Tie Day
Bow Tie Day at the Rocket Classic was created to honor the memory of Nick Gilbert, son of Dan and Jennifer Gilbert, and to spread awareness about neurofibromatosis (NF).
NF is a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on nerve pathways throughout the body. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is the most common form of the disease, affecting approximately one in every 2,500 births.
There is no present cure for NF, which affects millions of people worldwide, including all races, ethnicities and genders equally.
In 2011, Nick represented the Dan Gilbert-owned Cleveland Cavaliers at the NBA Draft Lottery wearing his signature bow tie, beginning a four-year span that saw the team win the #1 draft pick three times. Since then, the Bow Tie became a symbol associated with Nick’s passion, optimism and love for life.
Nick was a pillar of strength throughout his 26 years of life – publicly sharing his story of NF and giving a voice to the millions of people battling this disease worldwide. Through Bow Tie Day, we are proud to continue this mission in Nick’s honor.
