Detroit Golf Club’s $16 Million Restoration Sets the Stage for an Elevated 2026 Rocket Classic

Detroit Golf Club (DGC), home of the Rocket Classic, is in the midst of a historic transformation. Following the 2025 tournament, construction began on a $16.1 million restoration of DGC’s North Course — the same course that’s tested PGA TOUR players and thrilled fans for years.

Led by acclaimed golf architect Tyler Rae, the project revives the original 1916 Donald Ross design while incorporating modern updates to enhance playability, drainage, and sustainability. Funded in part by member contributions and $2.2 million in proceeds from the 2025 Rocket Classic, this ambitious renovation is set for completion in time for tournament week — July 30 through August 2, 2026.

Restoring History, Elevating the Challenge

The renovation honors Ross’s timeless vision while fine-tuning the North Course for today’s game. Highlights include:

  • Expanded layout: New tee boxes add 200–400 yards overall, lengthening holes 1 and 2 for a more demanding opening stretch.

  • Smarter drainage: Redesigned ditches and updated systems help eliminate flooding, including the removal of the large pond near hole 14.

  • Authentic bunker restoration: Strategically rebuilt bunkers reflect Ross’s original artistry.

  • Greens and fairways rebuilt: Fresh turf and larger tee boxes enhance playability and consistency.

  • Modernized irrigation: Cutting-edge technology ensures firmer, faster playing conditions for the pros in 2026.

Even as North Course work continues, DGC has kept 18 holes open using much of the South Course — several holes of which are also getting minor upgrades before its own full renovation, planned for 2028 or 2029.

A Revitalized Stage for Golf’s Best

This restoration brings more than visual upgrades. It sets the stage for a world-class experience that blends Detroit’s rich golf heritage with a championship test worthy of the PGA TOUR stage. Fans and players alike can expect a layout that’s truer to Ross’s strategic intent — bold, beautiful, and balanced.

As we count down to July 30 – August 2, 2026, excitement is already building for what promises to be a truly special tournament week.
